Maple College Korea: Second location

Housing is wonderful, the loft apartment comes fully equipped and is just a short distance from the bus and subway station. The school is located 15 minutes away by bus. It takes about 20 minutes by subway to get downtown, however Pusan national university has many establishments that foreigners find great.

Currently Maple College has 2 foreign English teachers, 10 local teachers and over 100 students. Students range from elementary to middle school with controllable class sizes of 5 to 10 students. The school has been in operation for over 3 years, however Maple College has been established at another location in Pusan for over 10 years. Salary begins at 2.1 million Won or $ 2100 US (more depending on experience) and 18,000 Won overtime. The one year contract includes include: airfare, health care, pension, severance pay, sponsored visa, and housing. Teachers work Monday through Friday from 2:30 – 9:30, with about 24 to 30 hours a week.

Culturlingua curriculum is preset by the school in a modern educational building. Pay is 5,000 Mexican Pesos ($ 490 US) per month with a 50 Pesos per hour over time, for a five month contract period. Teachers work 30 hours a week, 8:00pm to 11:00 and or 3:00pm to 8:30pm (generally 6 – 1 hour - classes a day). Classes are from Monday through Friday and all levels of students are taught.

Shared housing is provided only 5 minutes from the school. Each house comes with bathroom with shower, kitchen with stove, living room and private bedrooms. Volunteer Teach in India for One Month: Once in a Lifetime Experience at the Buddhist Relief Mission

India: volunteer in Buddhist Relief Mission in the city of Kolkata (March 13, 2009). Kolkata (formally known as Calcutta) served as the capital of India during the British Raj until 1911. Kolkata, is by far not a small city, 72 cities and 527 towns and villages and a population of over four and a half million. A city rich in history and culture, there is always a place to see and explore.

The climate is tropical; that is it is hot and humid. The monsoons (raining season) generally hit in June, it is a perfect location for teachers who love to sit and read under tropical trees in the hot afternoon. Don't worry the house comes with air conditioning.

History: Buddhist Relief Mission is an organization started in Japan more than twenty years ago, registered as a non-profit in Michigan, and still going. About 15 years ago, the mission started supporting several student monks in India. After a few years, they formed an organization, Young Buddhist Students Literacy Mission < www.bmission.net> Bodhisukha Monastery was established in Barasat shortly after. A few Years later Bodhisukha School began, an English medium school for local children (mainly Hindu and Muslim). They also offered free education to several boys from Northeast India. These boys live at the monastery and help the monks.

In 2001, the president of the school, one of the first monks, discussed the possibility of an intensive English course for Burmese monks studying at universities in India. This became a reality in 2006. Bodhisukha School is on vacation mid-March to mid-April, so the classrooms are available. Monks, not only Burmese now, gather and stay at the monastery for the course.

The Buddhist Relief Mission is specifically located at Barasat, Badu (1 hour from Kolkata, 15 min from mission), Barasat, Kolkata and the housing is right on campus. The provided housing comes equipped with a single bed, table/chairs, fan, and air conditioner. Once you, the teacher, arrive at the relief mission, little money is required. The school provides meals on top of housing.

Directors Notes:

It is a very exciting program, where the students, almost entirely monks studying at universities in India, study diligently for six-eight hours a day for one month. They are the most eager students any teacher will ever encounter in his or her lifetime.

Furthermore, the teacher is completely free to teach as he or she likes, trying any valid exercises from one's own portfolio.

The only stipulation is that the teacher be a volunteer. There is no remuneration whatsoever. However, meals and accommodation during the course are provided, and, being a 501(c)3 organization, all expenses, including airfare, can be deducted as a donation on US income taxes.

The 3 year old establishment is a great opportunity for a beginning teacher who needs experience, the individual discerning whether or not to become a teacher, or the teacher that wishes to give back to the community. Classes are between 20 and 30 students large with high school, university and adult students.

The syllabus, which covers all four ESL skills, is cooperatively developed by the teaching team, and each member is free to teach according to his or her own methods, incorporating favorite lessons from his or her professional dossier. Seeing that the teacher will be immersed right into the Buddhist community, it is a huge learning experience right from the birthplace of Buddhism.

Russia: Great School with Great House

By far the housing is superior to most jobs that you would find at other Russian schools. TV, VCR/DVD, single bed, bedding, microwave, toaster, dishes, sofa, table/chairs, desk, washing machine, iron, fan… are all included in the single bedroom, living room, and kitchen apartment. For those teachers that love to cook, this apartment has both an oven and stove! With only a short five minute walk to the school the apartment is situated almost right downtown. For those that worry about the cold of Siberia, both the school and home have great central heating which runs on Surgutneftegas and gasprom (Surgutneftegas and gasprom are Russia's top producers of gas, the town people are very proud of this fact) and because of the low humidity the Siberian winter does not feel as cold.

The school offers an excellent pay package of 800 Euro a month ($1200 US), which is well beyond the expected salary in Siberia. Contract period is September to May, and bonuses include airfare, housing, health care, severance pay, sponsored visa, free Russian lessons and free music lessons.

‘Express English School’ is looking for a enthusiastic teacher to work Monday through Friday, 28 hours a week (1 hour = 40 min), 9:00am - 6:00pm or 11:00am – 8:00pm. The school has been in business for 12 years and currently employs 3 foreign language instructors. The school follows a set curriculum for approximately 200 students ranging from middle and high school as well as adults. Class sizes are controllable with 5 to 10 students, each class is 80 minutes.

No experience is necessary to work at ‘Express English School,’ however a teacher with experience is preferred. British or Australian teachers are preferred however the school is open to other candidates. Teachers are required to have CELTA, TESL, TEFL or equivalent certification. Gaozhou Middle School China: Getaway & Experience the Real China

Established on March 15 1905, Gaozhou Middle School has become one f the most successful schools in Guangdong Province. Although Gaozhou is only a small city the school has a big reputation, having produced some exceptional scholars over its 103 year history.

The school was originally situated down-town. That location is now the Junior Campus of Gaozhou Middle School and the senior school occupies a beautiful new campus, opened in 2002, on the southern outskirts of the city. The two campuses combined have an enrollment of more than 13,000 students and more than 600 teachers. As with all government schools in China this one is run by the local government, the Education Bureau, and a group of Deans under the Principal. They do quite a good job at our school. The Dean of English, Mr Liang, is our boss. The school is licensed to hire Foreign Teachers (the first Government school in this area to be so) and of course will provide you with the necessary legal documents to get your visa.

The school environment is friendly and happy. Most of the teachers are friendly and outgoing, even those who speak little or no English. There are some Chinese English teachers who speak good English and will readily make friends with you. (There are other FTs in Maoming so a weekend or night there will meet your need for Western company).

Housing is a comfortable apartment in a good location close to school, friendly neighbours, often cool breezes, bathroom, 2 bedrooms , equipped kitchen, local phone free, ADSL connection (bring your laptop if you have one but you will have to pay for Internet time – it's very cheap) The school will also provide a computer. If you come directly to Gaozhou from outside China a generous reimbursement towards your visa costs will bw paid when you get here. Airfares are not paid but there is a substantial bonus paid after a 2-term contract. That and the competitive salary easily compensates. Statutory holidays are of course taken and paid. Summer holidays are not paid but we will try to help you find summer camp work if you want it and a travel allowance is paid. A few schools (not many!) pay part salary in the Summer but this is rar<img src=" border="0" height="166">e, especially as most 2-term contracts run from September to June/July thereby missing the summer holidays. Besides, the salaries we earn allow for a very comfortable lifestyle and travel to other parts of this fascinating country in the summer. We teach 26 to 30 classes per week, which sounds like a lot, but it's still only a maximum of 20 hours a week and all one grade, so only one lesson plan for the week. And no, it doesn't get boring because every class is different – some kids are better with English, some classes have many kids whose English is OK, some only a few. Usually work is from Monday to Friday and plenty of free time, although some Saturday morning classes may occasionally be scheduled. I've worked up to 30 class periods weekly, had Tuesday and Thursday afternoons free, and free weekends. Wonderful! An easy life.

The school supplies us with the text book and teacher's book but as we are teaching Oral English almost exclusively we have a lot of liberty for creative lesson planning. A few of the teachers like us to work with them on the speaking parts of the book but that's up to us. There are computers and OHP equipment in many classrooms. Photocopying is available and bigger quantities of materials can be printed at the school. They watch the cost but I have used this facility several times and it's very useful. There's a huge amount of good material available free from the Internet too. If you teach Senior Grade 1 the age group is around 15 to16 and Senior Grade 2 is 16 to 17. (Primary School is Years 1 to 6, Junior Middle School is Junior Grade 1 to Junior Grade 3 (Years 7 to 9), and Senior Middle School is Senior Grade 1 to 3 (Years 10 to 12)). Classes are BIG, average being around 70. I had one Senior Grade 3 English Major class once with 99! Obviously with such big classes we cannot deal with all the students but that's normal life in this country of 1.3 billion people. I must say here that the majority of the kids are wonderful – friendly, diligent, polite, light-hearted, helpful...... Some who were my first students 4 years ago and now are at University are still my good friends. It really is a great school and a good place to work. I wouldn't have stayed so long if it wasn't.

Being an FT here is pretty exciting – you will be a celebrity. I was at the school for three years and actually living in the city more than two and we get invited to lots of things, dinners, TV, etc. We're a real novelty to many people. If you are friendly and light- hearted the students will love you, the teachers will befriend you, and you'll have a great time. Get over the culture shock, accept that most things are not “good” or “bad” but just different and teaching and living here will be a wonderful experience for you.

Gaozhou – Experience the REAL China (Contributed by current teacher)

Gaozhou is a small city (by Chinese standards) situated in the Maoming Prefecture of Western Guangdong Province, China. The city population is around 280 000 while the area, Gaozhou and area, is home to around 500 000. Gaozhou is an ancient city with a proud history, although now developing rapidly. It's not a beautiful city but I like it. There are fascinating old areas of the city, interesting temples, great food, good shopping, and friendly people. The surrounding countryside has some nice hills and farms, good for a day's cycling or walking. Of course as foreigners we attract a great deal of interest, especially when we get out into the villages. There have only ever been nine or ten foreigners who have lived in Gaozhou.

This is the capital of the lychee industry. Most hillsides round about are covered with lychee orchards and this wonderful fruit is king here. The story goes that teams of riders on horseback in ancient times took lychees from Gaozhou to the Emperor in Beijing. Fruit production is a big industry here with longans, bananas, pineapples, mangoes, oranges, watermelons, and strawberries all grown. And the variety of vegetables, fresh from the farms every day, is just wonderful.

Gaozhou is also known for its production of leather gloves, mainly industrial gloves, and for its technical and trade training schools. There are more than one hundred technical schools in the area, ranging from very large and well established institutions to very small schools of lesser quality. People keep saying that Gaozhou is a poor city but there is a building boom with new apartment buildings and very nice houses all over the place, an increasing number of cars, and SO MANY motorbike shops. Not as rich as Maoming perhaps but not so poor either, although there are poor people, as elsewhere.

There are several quite good supermarkets and department stores, a good variety of cheap clothing (although not always styles and sizes to suit us bigger westerners – I'm tall and very thin and can buy pants and short-sleeved shirts OK but long- sleeved shirts are another matter. But tailor-made is not expensive), and very good footwear. I recently bought a pair of very nice dress shoes, hand made, for 85 Yuan RMB. Electrical and electronic goods can be good quality and cheap.

Western food is in short supply, as it is in most places in China, but we come to a foreign country to try new things don't we – including new foods. If you're really adventurous you can try dog, frog, donkey, sand worms...

In Maoming there are McDonalds and KFC. We also have a local KFC copy called MFC which is quite good. But the variety of Chinese foods here is very good and so cheap. We particularly like the hand-made noodles from a Moslem family from Xinjiang Province up in the North-west. Eating out is the Number 1 social activity and usually is great fun.

If you're a TV fanatic you'll be disappointed in Gaozhou. As in most parts of China English language TV is almost non-existent. But there's a good range of western movies and TV shows on DVD for hire and a DVD player is really cheap.

Only 30 or 40 minutes away by bus or taxi is the modern city of Maoming and another 30 minutes travel takes you to the nice town of Shuidong and No.1 Sea Beach. It's a great place for a day out or an overnight stay. The hotels at the beach are quite good and cheap. Lots of fresh seafood too.

Many FT's (Foreign Teachers) want to go to Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou. It's great to travel to those places and experience the wide variety of cultures and customs in this huge country and we have plenty of vacation time and good pay to do just that. But to really settle in a place for a year and experience the life, make friends, and get over the culture shock, there's nothing like a smaller city or town. I tell my students, “Gaozhou is great. I can ride my bicycle from one side of the city to the other in 20 minutes.” I've been to Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, and Changsha, as well as some other smaller cities and towns, and I'm so glad I chose a smaller place to live and work. The people are friendlier, the air is cleaner, and the cost of living is MUCH lower. You can really save money in Gaozhou if you want to – a great idea if you want to see other parts of China in the holidays.

Deciding to move to another country presents some challenges. It can sometimes be lonely, sometimes boring, sometimes frustrating...... sounds like home really. Make up your mind to enjoy the experience and you'll have a good time in Gaozhou. Hope to see you here.

Currently Maple College has 6 foreign English teachers, 30 local teachers and over 500 students. Students range from elementary to middle school with controllable class sizes of 5 to 10 students. With 10 years of operation, previous teachers have established a curriculum and resources for all teachers to use. Salary begins at 2.1 million Won or $ 2100 US (more depending on experience) and 18,000 Won overtime. The one year contract includes include: airfare, health care, pension, severance pay, sponsored visa, and housing. Teachers work Monday through Friday from 2:30 – 9:30, with about 25 to 30 hours a week.

Apartment housing is provided that is located almost right on the beach and only 10 minutes from the school. The one room, under five years old, non-shared housing with kitchen and bathroom comes complete with: TV, VCR/DVD, queen sized bed, microwave, rice cooker, toaster, dishes, sofa, washing machine, iron,fan, and air conditioner.

The city is 1850m or 6,070 feet above sea level, which gives the city more mild temperatures than other lower elevated cities, however the city is still hot with desert-like climate. History dates back to the 1500’s when early settlers searched for gold and silver in the near by mountains. Old classically designed buildings are found throughout the city, churches and museums are numerous. This is the ideal location for teachers wishing to experience Mexico without the high population and extremely hot temperatures.

Berlitz San Luis Potosi school, has been established since 2006, that follows a curriculum based from school chain’s head office. Berlitz is one of the worlds leading English Language schools, with over 470 locations in 70 different countries with a history dating back to the late 1800’s. The specific location has over 200 students and 14 language instructors. Classes are smaller and more manageable with less than 10 students. Students are all levels ranging from kindergarten to adults. Teachers work 20 or more hours per week with 90 minute classes Monday through Friday. Teach in Yanji City, China: as close to North Korea as you can get

Closely bordering North Korea and Russia (map), Yanji China is about as close to Pyeongyang as you can get without actually teaching in North Korea. The city (population of just under half a million), though officially Chinese, has a large proportion of Korean residence. Step back in time to see what life was like in Korea and China in the early 1900’s without having to teach in the restricted North Korea. Street signs are written in both Chinese and Korean, Korean shops and restaurants mix with Chinese though out the city.

‘YES Youngdo English School,’ in Jilin Province China, is looking for a qualified ESL/EFL instructor with hard-working ethics, a great passion for teaching, and can follow arrangements of the school. The institution has been established for twenty years and is located in the city center. It currently employs four other foreign teachers. Single housing is included in the contract, and is located only five minutes from the school (the housing is under five years old). The one room apartment with living room and bathroom (with shower) comes with TV, VCR, single bed with bedding, Rice cooker, Dishes, Table/chairs, Desk, Washing machine, and fan.

Working hours are from 22 to 30 hours per week Monday through Friday with each class being 80 to 120 minutes long. Classes follow a set curriculum and have between 10 and 20 students. The teacher is expected to sign a minimum of six month contract however, roundtrip flights are included if for a full year. Salary is between 4000 to 10 000 RMB a month ($580 to $1460 USD) depending on qualifications.

Teacher should have at least one year teaching experience, a bachelor degree and TEFL/TESOL qualifications.
